My House

Being a homeowner on James Island, I’ve FULLY taken advantage of the fact that this can be my ‘experimental building playground.’  I feel that it’s very important as an Architect, to also have hand’s on knowledge with construction.  My 1950′s, 1000sf concrete block house has undergone lots of renovations over the past few years (and much of it still unfinished!).  My partner, and fellow co-homeowner, Matt McQueen of Handcrafted LLC, has taught me most of what I know about building and construction.  Here you can see some of the work the two of us have done together over the years (we make a great duo).  With my new love of Natural Building, my house also serves as a great palette for practicing and learning these techniques as well!

(for more pictures and info on all of these workshops, be sure to check out my Facebook Page and my Blog!)

Hand's On Construction - My House, James Island

Here you can view some of the more 'traditional' building renovations I've made on my home; all hand's on practice/work.

Earthen Bench

The work continues on my back deck. Here I begin to build the Earthen Bench which will tie in with the cob infill. Everything will be plastered in the end. I used a local clay I found at low tide along a river. I also am experimenting with making clay-slip 'paints' which you can see painted on the cinder block wall. Keep checking back as the work continues!
