A Word from our Clients

1. Modern, Oceanfront Home

“I sought an architect with a “green” orientation to build a house on a tight oceanfront lot in Pawleys Island, SC and found April online. As an artist, I wished my home to be an artful yet practical living space to accommodate visiting friends and family. Because many generations of my family have vacationed at Pawleys, I wanted a 21st century home that subtly alluded to the rich history of the island. April quickly and competently translated my wishes into the design for a beautiful passive solar home.”  Esther Sharp, home owner and artist

2. Careful Permitting for a Unique Project

As a small, “green” school for special needs students, the idea of building a classroom using natural building techniques really appealed to us and our students.  I contacted April and immediately I knew I had found the right person to help us make our dream come true.  After we were awarded a grant, she designed a classroom that was absolutely perfect for the location, our needs and the local community.  Because no natural building had been permitted in our area, she worked tirelessly to ensure every possible question about this building was anticipated, researched, and testing available before our plans were submitted for permitting.  When we had difficulty finding a general contractor, she found the perfect contractor for our project. I was not only confident in her expertise, but depended heavily on her guidance in keeping the project moving forward within the time frame mandated by our grant.  I realized then that while I had appreciated her skills as they pertained to our project, I had no idea how impressive her skills were to seasoned  professionals.  We were SO lucky to have found April!  She has gone so far above and beyond all expectations.”  Edith Bailey, Assistant Head, The Barclay SchoolColumbia, SC

3.  Home Renovation leads to Gallery Renovation

We brought April in to work with us and our builder on two very personal projects. First, was our home studio renovation. We wanted to add elements of nature seamlessly flowing with clean architectural lines.  April made sure that the project had just the right amount of interesting design elements; the use of flowing lines, steel walls, and open air spaces, made it so that the room is now a retreat to paint in.  The space was recently featured in Charleston Magazine. The second project was our 2 Queen Street gallery.  The building is from 1670, so updating the space so that it was a contemporary gallery space but still had the old world elements was the challenge of the project. April incorporated resin “light-reflecting” walls filled with reed grass into one part of the space which helped to mask the unattractive existing windows, yet still allow light to filter through into the space. Before and during both renovations April was able to incorporate ideas that tastefully added to the end result. 4. Community Green Project

“We met April Magill at a Board of Architectural review meeting where she was presenting a major downtown green project. As tough as the BAR can be they praised her concepts, drawing, presentation and style with enthusiasm.   As a builder who presents to the BAR regularly this task can be nerve wracking to even the toughest presenter.   As a homeowner we tasked April to design a outdoor living space for us to entertain, live and be private, similar to other small gardens in downtown Charleston.  Her designs are spot on.  Every small item we asked for was put into the design with expertise and artisanship.  April has also helped us source recycled materials to keep our budget in line and have our project be a green build. If you are considering April for an architectural project please do not hesitate to call me.” Kevin Meek, President, Rock Creek Craftsmen

5.  Reconnecting with History

“Working with April Magill (the “Mud Queen”) has been an exciting, educational, and creative journey which helped me to reconnect with nature and connect more with my creativity.  The earthen oven that was built for the International Gullah/Geechee Camp Meeting Center is a gift, delivered through the leadership and workshop of April Magill. I love building with April!!!    Elder Carlie Towne, Founder of the Gullah/Geechee Angel Network

6. Wonderful Workshop

“Hi April, just wanted to let let you know how much I enjoyed your cob workshop. The topics we covered was enough to get even some of us rookies going! It came at the right moment for me to plan the cobbing of my own project so it was a wonderful experience. We had a big class and kudu’s to you for keeping us going! I made some fantastic new friends and already we are planning to get together to build a rocket oven (or two). You’re a caring and sharing person and we appreciate all that you do.”  Mike Creedy, Florida Dome Home

7.  Contemporary Home Addition

In planning, designing and building the addition on my house, April amazed me with her ability to understand and realize ‘my vision’.   Additionally, her vast working knowledge of contemporary construction and design trends is remarkable.”  Megan McQueen, Home Owner/Artist
